Cecilia Rests

Hola!

Cecilia is doing great- She's comfortable and on some good drugs for pain. We are moving from the PICU to the Pediatric Ward which is a good thing- less critical. Now she just needs to start eating better.

Let's catch up:

Yesterday, our day started at 5:30 in the morning with radiographs! Cecilia fell back asleep after the radiographs and we hung out in bed for a half hour or so. They planned on taking her off the ventilator and extubating her around 7:30am. What they didn't plan for was her being a bucking bronco of a patient. Little lady was making them sweat! After she was extubated she became enormously thirsty and we think it was her throat that was bothering her. A couple of the medications she was on cause dry mouth; fentanyl and lasix. They typically don't give them anything by mouth for four hours but Cecilia was begging and pleading so we gave her water on sponges. Initially she was ok with the sponges, but then she became frustrated and bit the ends off of about 5 of them before we just gave her water. The floor was littered with little poofs of sponge. She is the C-monster, after all!

After taking her off the ventilator and seeing how panicked she was with all the tubes and such, they began quickly removing some of them. She had her nasogastric tube pulled, one of her drains pulled, her urinary catheter pulled and the EEG monitor removed. It was a tornado of tube removal for sure! She drank some more water after that and then passed out- for about 10 hours! Little girl was so tired! The nurse said sedated sleep isn't very restful, so she was likely exhausted from the last 24 hours.

We spent the rest of the day just finding ways to pass the time- I guess I should have written a blog post! But instead I went home and watered the garden and cleaned myself up. :) Mark tried out the gym in the hospital and napped with Cecilia for most of the day.

She woke up at 9pm and was ready to party! She was doing little dances and crawling around her bed. She took a little bit of food but wasn't interested in eating a full meal; grapes, blueberries, yogurt, pudding, bagel with cream cheese. Things happened- there was wetting the bed and a little explosion of the bulb which collects the chest fluid- :) It was a messy mess- but after we got her all cleaned up she fell asleep for the night! ...and so did we!

Today, Friday?? Wow-

We were up at about 6:30 am. Cecilia has been sleeping a lot so there's not too much to say. Her breakfast is ready for her when she wakes up. She did wake up for about an hour this morning at 630am. She was pretty groggy even though she'd slept pretty well through the night. I got her out of the bed and we cuddled a little bit while she fell back asleep. Mark and I are out in the family area eating some hospital breakfast- mmmmm. The team is planning on removing her central line (IV line which feeds into her jugular vein in her neck) and discontinuing her prophylactic antibiotic before moving her to the pediatric ward. We shall see how the day unfolds!

Thank you all for thinking of our little lady- we are so relieved to see how well she is doing. When we saw that smile and her dance moves last night I felt completely uplifted. We have our Cecilia back!
